The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statistics from the 2017 American Social Survey, an annual program that asks millions of Americans each year about various social, economic, and demographic characteristics. The bureau publishes statistics for all 50 states and Washington DC.

Using recent U.S. Census data, we determined that only nine states—California, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Georgia, and Florida—account for half of the total U.S. population.

Why Living In A City Is Terrible For You

The remaining nine of the 41 US states have the same number of inhabitants, taking into account their relative population density.

States like California and New York have high average densities of 251 and 420 people per square mile, with millions of people concentrated in large cities. It even takes into account the many suburbs of the two states where the population is more spread out.

States without densely populated cities have very different numbers. Alaska, the largest state by area, ranks 50th in population density, with just 1.3 people per square mile.
